White Eagle, Red Star - mod for HoI2
WERS - What is it?
WERS (White Eagle, Red Star) is a battle mod for Hearts of Iron 2 game. The main thema is fighting of reboring Poland for independence during 1919-1921. Player will be also a witness of dramatic fight between White Russians loyal to Czar and the Red Army. War theatre covers Middle-Eastern Europe.
How does it start?
Beginigs of works under WERS mode were started in november 2004. When Ufiak seemed support from rest of the eufi forum users, he has started to collect informations and create a team. It's worth to say that development of mod was started before HoI 2 was released. We were lean mainly over screens, interviews and reviews of beta version from many foreign internet sites.
With passed time, Paradox shows more info that allowed us to forseen what possibilities will come with second part of Iron Hearts. One of the most important things was greater fragmentation of Eastern Europe and new combat system - those things decided to create this mod.
Why "WERS"?
At the beginning the project was named "Polish-Bolshevik War", but after some time we decided, that more mass media know name would be worth to think about. And that, troughsurvey "White Eagle, Red Star" name has been chosen - name taken from Norman Davis book.
What's makes WERS special?
One of the most interesting innovations is unusual 'Order de Batallie' at the level of brigades (instead like in normal game - divisions), quite amount of flags, unique photos, icons and other graphics, and of course uncounted number of possibilities from historical and hipotetical events that the game is abound with.
Very interesting is also tactical situation - fight only with few squads and try to fill the front holes, but to be honest having nothing. The mod impels player to thinking, he has to strike intelligent, because frontal mass assault on all provinces ("and no step backward!") gives nothing. We will be quickly surrounded and "neutralized". The difficult level is set really high.
We are planning that the all sides will be playable for human players. From Lithuania, trough Ukrainian republics and to Bolshevik Russia and of course Poland. Till now, not all of those countries are fully playable, but since the gold version will be released many things will change.
WERS today
The newest downloadable beta version is 0.8. Actually our team works out improveing OdeB, adding new events, balancing the gameplay and graphic.
Our team
Most people that are creating WERS are mostly forum members connected with another project - "Poland in CORE". When that project was first suspended for few months and then closed in waiting for CORE2, "unemployed" users joined or rather started WERS mod. Whole idea is coordinated by Halibutt - a person really meritorious for polish HoI scene, project manager of "Poland in HoI" and "Generalittion for Poland". Of course others, average Eufi forum users cannot be forgotten, they broght a very vital contribution. Many of them started to egzist on this forum thanks to this mod, that inspired them to write theirs first post here.
There also egzist a music supplement for WERS - creation of Halibutt and few others music burning heads.
We have got coworkers on Paradox forum (for e.g. Lt. Hilsdorf, who completly independantly started works about polish-bolshevik war mod) and on other foreign forums.
Future plans
We are trying to complete the mod as soon as possible, but there is a lot of work to do and still more new ideas. It is possible that in spring 2009 final version of WERS will be released. Many depends of releasing CORE2 mod, which can delay our work a little (or far more than little). But we very hopefull.
